Tories were left outraged after Labour’s shadow culture secretary compared the suspension of Gary Lineker to “Putin’s Russia.”
Lucy Powell asked the Commons the optics of a “much-loved sports presenter” being taken off air for “tweeting something the government doesn’t like.”
“It sounds more like Putin’s Russia to me,” she added, much to the anger of Conservative MPs.
Culture minister Julia Lopez said it was a “disgraceful comparison to make,” and “way off the mark.”
